TECH TIPS

Information about your

Water Pump

  • Q: Do you recommend the use of CSR Water Pumps for street use?
  • A: Yes, a large percentage of pumps are sold to street users.
  • Q: How do I wire my water pump and what size wire is recommended?
  • A:We recommend that the water pump be wired and fused separately. A #12 gauge wire minimum with a 15-amp fuse minimum. An adequate chassis ground is required Blue wire, positive, 12v, black wire is ground. Do not ground to anodized or powder coated surfaces.
  • Q: What is involved in installing a CSR Water Pump on a late model with a serpentine belt system?
  • A: Most of these applications are a direct bolt on utilizing a shorter belt.
  • Q: I have installed a CSR Water Pump and I can hear the motor running but it is not circulating water. What could be the cause?
  • A: Check for air somewhere in the system. Fill the system from the highest point such as the intake manifold or the radiator hose while the pump is running.
  • Q: What is the life expectancy of the electric motor?
  • A: The motor should be replaced at 3500 hours or 50,000 miles of everyday use.
  • Do not run water pump on a closed thermostat.
  • To move wire to any position: Water pump motor can be rotated by removing the 4 black bolts on the top of the motor, brush plate and magnet ring must be rotated together.
  • We no longer have parts for any of the old 3 bladed impeller style water pumps.
  • A water pump with serial number starting with a letter is our new style pump requires a hose adapter fitting with a 1-1/16-20 FIP . The pump with all numbers for serial numbers will have 3/4″ FIP hose adapter fitting.

Information about your Starter

  • Q: Do your starters work well for street applications?
  • A: Yes, we recommend street use, but also for drag racing, road racing, circle track, truck and tractor pulling, street rods, and mud bogging.
  • Q: What is the recommended battery cable size?
  • A: A minimum of a 2-gauge copper battery cable.
  • Q: I am trying to install my new starter but the solenoid is interfering with chassis upright?
  • A: All of our starters have lockable mounting positions to solve this problem. Simply remove the bolts securing the mounting nose and rotate the starter housing to another position and reinstall the bolts.
  • Q: My crewmembers have noticed sparks coming from the bell housing area when the car leaves the starting line. What is the cause?
  • A: A broken spring on the starter pinion gear is allowing it to be forced out toward the ring gear, or the torque converter has placed so much force on the center of the stock style flexplate that it has forced the flexplate ring gear into the starter pinion gear. The use of a CSR Flexplate will solve this problem.
  • Q: When cranking my engine to adjust the valves, the starter pinion gear stayed engaged into the flywheel ring gear. What is the problem?
  • A: The starter pinion gear will only retract when the engine is started.
  • Q: When starting my 490 plus CI engine. I have experienced flywheel ring gear breakage. What is causing this?
  • A: We highly recommend (for larger CI engines over 13.5:1 compression ratio) the use of a timing retard system. More importantly be sure to use only CSR Platinum Pro Series Starter for these applications.
  • Q: While cranking the engine, my starter pinion gear is engaged into the flexplate, but the engine is not turning over. What could be the problem?
  • A: The sprag-unit within the starter has been broken, most likely the cause is while attempting to start a high compression engine, and the engine sneezes which causes backward rotation.
  • Q: How do I wire my starter through a Ford remote solenoid?
  • A: Not recommended.
